America: The Cookbook

11/02/2017 - 7:00pm

Central Library - Community Rooms 301 & 302

America: The Cookbook is the first book to document comprehensively – and celebrate – the remarkable diversity of American cuisine and food culture. A thoroughly researched compendium of 800 home-cooking recipes for delicious and authentic American dishes, America: The Cookbook explores the country's myriad traditions and influences, regional favorites and melting-pot fusion – the culinary heritage of a nation, from appetizers to desserts and beyond. A unique state-by-state section features essays and menus from a 'who's who' of 100 foremost food experts and chefs.

Starting from the question, ‘What is American food?’ the conversation will explore ideas surrounding American food culture and history, ranging from regionalism and immigration to diversity and innovation, breaking the myth that America is a culinary wasteland, instead revealing ways in which, as author Gabrielle Langholtz writes: "Our culinary canon is wild and wonderful. It is old and it is young. It is slippery and sticky, sour and sweet, and searingly spicy. It’s black and white and brown. It’s messy and it’s meaningful." Gabrielle will be joined by a panel of contributors to America: The Cookbook, including Christine Muhlke and Ari Weinzweig.
